Summary:This paper introduces the recent progress in the metamaterial-based technology applied in high-gain planar antenna design. First, we brief the important considerations and challenges in the design of high-gain antennas such as losses or radiation efficiency and operating bandwidth when the metamaterials structures are used to enhance the performance of antennas. After that, a Febry Perot cavity antenna with artificial magnetic conductor loading is introduced for electrically thin and high-gain design. A leaky-wave waveguide antenna with composite right-handed/left-handed structure is designed for wide-angle beam-scanning. At last, the antenna loaded with an electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) layer is reported for broadband operation and low-profile design.
