Application of Multivariable PID Controllers in a Coupled Tank System

In this paper, a comparative study was made between the techniques proposed by Almeida & Coelho (2002) and Moonyong Lee, Kihong Lee, Changgeun Kim & Jietae Lee (2004) to achieve the multivariable decentralized proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control of a two-input two-output (TITO) sy...

Summary:In this paper, a comparative study was made between the techniques proposed by Almeida & Coelho (2002) and Moonyong Lee, Kihong Lee, Changgeun Kim & Jietae Lee (2004) to achieve the multivariable decentralized proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control of a two-input two-output (TITO) system. In adition some aspects of the loop interaction proposed by Pereira, Veronesi, Visoli, Normey-Rico & Torrico (2016) are revived. Both techniques were evaluated at a coupled tank system. A process model has been obtained, the PID controllers have been designed according to the proposed approaches, the control systems were simulated and applied to the coupled tanks system. The results were presented for both cases, a comparison was made between the effectiveness of each technique.
