Summary:The grounding structures of high-voltage XLPE cable terminations, such as lead sealing and copper net wrapping, are key points during the operation of cables. Among the 18 fault cases of the high voltage cable terminal in recent two years, 11 faults are found to be related with the structure of copper net wrapping. According to the dissection and simulation analysis of these cable terminal faults, the cable without copper net wrapping is proved to be the weak point during the operation of cable, which is the hidden trouble of partial discharge and overheating. The copper net wrapping structure is suggested to be focused on during the selection of cable terminal, and a large length cable without copper net wrapping should be avoided. Meanwhile, intensive infrared temperature measurements and results comparisons are advised to the operating cable terminal without the copper net wrapping or similar structures.
