Summary:Summary form only given. As detectors used in magnetic recording read channels are capable of operating at ever-lower signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), more burden is placed on the timing recovery system. The timing recovery system must operate at the same SNR as the detector, but may have additional limitations placed upon it, such as delay criteria. Decision-directed (DD) timing recovery (TR) schemes have been shown to work well with current magnetic recording systems. In this work we investigate timing recovery by the method of cross-correlation (XC).
