Summary:A new ultrasound interstitial instrumentation is tested for its use as a thermal therapy device. The acoustic output of the device is measured to enable evaluation of the device performance in intended heating of abnormal tissues. We propose figure of merit for acoustic signal processing to evaluate device comparison. Our results show that the new applicator with compression type piezoelectric element has a promise as a therapeutic device. The shear type applicator seems to be impractical.
