Summary:This paper describes two different learning paradigms, namely One Room School House (ORSH) and Design Challenge Based Learning (DCBL). ORSH is targeted at teaching design-oriented HCI at combined undergraduate and graduate levels in small scale settings. DCBL is targeted at teaching design-oriented HCI to undergraduate and/or graduate levels in larger scale settings. The basic paradigms are described and the results of three years of student evaluations for these approaches are discussed with an eye towards construction of hypotheses about why the trends are as they are and how the paradigms may be improved and further evaluated going forward. The collaborative elements of the paradigms and certain classroom facilities in which these paradigms have been applied are also briefly described.
