Summary:In this paper, we propose a new location management scheme that reduces location update and query cost. In order to reduce location update and query cost, the proposed scheme use movement locality. The scheme has the following features: (i) for mobile terminals in neighboring location areas, location update requires a one-hop message exchange, (ii) for the mobile terminal in neighboring location areas, location query requires a one-hop message exchange. Analytical models are set up to analyze the performance of the proposed scheme, and compare it with that of the IS-41 scheme. The measures of comparison used are the communication cost, the database cost, and the total cost. For all these measures, the proposed scheme performs better than the IS-41 scheme. Results also show that for low and high values of CMR, the scheme performs better than the IS-41 scheme.
