Summary:With the rapid development of China's power grid, a great progress has been made in MMC-HVDC application. The MMC-HVDC has the advantages of decoupled control of active and reactive power, which provides significant potential in asynchronous network connection, small network island operation, etc. Based on potential scope of MMCHVDC project, island operation is an inevitable situation. The ability of HVDC to operate and maintain island system stable can help improving the power supply quality and reduce the loss of load probability. But the voltage stability, and most of all, the frequency stability plays important roles during island operation. This article is inspired by Chongqing-Hubei back to back MMC-HVDC project. Firstly an objective function of minimum generators combination requirement was proposed. Secondly an equivalent network with large number of runoff hydro generators was modelled. Finally the correlation of the power flow through the tie-line and the commission level of generators in island network was analysed, and the system safety and stability control measurement suggestions were provided.
