Summary: | Digital beamforming in aperture array stations used in LOFAR and SKA enables the definition of substations. Effects like electromagnetic coupling between antennas in the station may result in unwanted correlated signals in the beamformed output of these substations. In this contribution, we formulate a mathematical model that can be fed by electromaagnetic simulations to describe these correlations. We use this model to make a first assessment of correlated sky background noise on the baseline between two substations in an SKA prototype station. Our findings indicate that further investigation into these effects is warranted to assess their impact on the scientific output of the SKA. |
