Summary:It is noted that the incorporation of graphic images into procedures at US Department of Energy (DOE) facilities is likely to enhance the usability of the procedures and, hence, the reliability of workers' task performance. However, because graphic images are inadequate media for communicating operational and dynamic information, they are best used as supplements to text. Both isomorphic and logical images are useful in procedures and should be developed in accordance with sound graphics principles. The authors discuss the findings of a project current underway for DOE to develop guidance for procedure developers in the principles of designing graphic images for use in (and as) procedures.< >
