Summary:The osteology of Istigobius ornatus is described and figured in detail. Istigobius ornatus is compared osteologically with recent literature accounts of three other gobioid genera (Microgobius, Tyson and Xenisthmus), and is found more similar to Microgobius but a close phylogenetic relationship between the two is not advanced. Istigobius is hypothesized to be most closely related to Exyrias.
