Photoionization of C7H6 and C7H5: Observation of the Fulvenallenyl Radical

Flashpoint: Threshold photoelectron spectra of the transient species C7H6 and C7H5 are recorded using synchrotron radiation. Both species are produced by flash pyrolysis from phthalide. The hitherto unobserved fulvenallenyl radical is identified to be the carrier of the C7H5 signal (see picture). Th...

Summary:Flashpoint: Threshold photoelectron spectra of the transient species C7H6 and C7H5 are recorded using synchrotron radiation. Both species are produced by flash pyrolysis from phthalide. The hitherto unobserved fulvenallenyl radical is identified to be the carrier of the C7H5 signal (see picture). The ionization energies of fulvenallenyl and fulvenallene are determined from the spectra.
