Selectivity of Th(IV) adsorption as compared to U(VI), La(III), Ce(III), Sm(III) and Gd(III) using mesoporous Al2O3

Herein, we have used mesoporous Al 2 O 3 as adsorbent and compared its efficacy with chromatographic neutral alumina for the selective adsorption and separation of Th(IV). Summary:Herein, we have used mesoporous Al 2 O 3 as adsorbent and compared its efficacy with chromatographic neutral alumina for the selective adsorption and separation of Th(IV). The metal ions form complex with thorin and the Th-thorin complex gets selectively adsorbed on the mesoporous alumina at pH 1 unlike other metal ions. The R 2 value of Langmuir isotherm model was found to be the highest and closer to 1. The adsorption capacities at 283, 303 and 328 K were found to be 50, 51.02 and 51.81 µmolg −1 respectively. The adsorbed thorium was desorbed from the adsorber upon treatment with trisodium citrate.
