Summary:Among the III-V semiconductors, boron BBi and BAs as well as their alloys have attracted both scientific and technological interest in recent years. We present a calculation of the structural, electronic and optical properties of ternary alloy BBi1−xAsx by means of the WIEN2k software package. The exchange-correlation potential is treated by the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) within the schema of Wu and Cohen. Also, we have used the modified Becke-Johnson (mBJ) formalism to improve the band gap results. All the calculations have been performed after geometry optimization. In this study, we have investigated structural properties such as the lattice constant (a0), bulk modulus (B0) and its pressure derivative (B′), and calculated the electronic band structures of the studied materials. Accurate calculation of linear optical properties, such as real ( 1) and imaginary ( 2) dielectric functions, reflectivity (R), electron energy loss spectrum, absorption coefficient ( ), refractive index (n) and sum rule (Neff) are investigated. Our obtained results for studied binary compounds, BBi and BAs, fairly coincide with other theoretical calculations and experimental measurements. According to the best of our knowledge, no experimental or theoretical data are presently available for the studied ternary alloy BBi1−xAsx (0 < x < 1). The role of electronic band structure calculation with regards to the linear optical properties of BBi1−xAsx is discussed. The effect of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) is also investigated and found to be quite small.
