Summary:Foils of FeCrAl alloys are used as a substrate in metal-supported automotive catalytic converters. FeCrAl alloys owe their excellent oxidation resistance at high temperature to a slow-growing α-Al2O3 scale. Increasing exhaust gas temperatures demand improved high-temperature mechanical properties in addition to oxidation resistance. To avoid these problems, foils of an austenitic FeNiCr alloy with an aluminium content higher than 6% can be produced by coating an FeNiCr alloy with pure aluminium, for example by cladding at intermediate thickness followed by cold rolling and diffusion annealing. Hot tensile tests were carried out on different heats/trials of conventional FeCrAl, and coated FeCrAl and FeNiCrAl at temperatures up to 1100 °C.
