Summary:One of the major promises of microgrids is the improvement of reliability and resilience of critical loads during adverse events. Yet, microgrids heavily rely on information and communication technologies which make them vulnerable to cyberattacks. In particular, microgrids require advanced protection systems such as adaptive protection systems that rely on communication systems to overcome the challenges posed by variation of fault current levels in different modes of operation and network configurations. In this paper, we investigate cyberattack threats against adaptive protection systems in microgrids. The vulnerability of adaptive protection systems in microgrids to cyberattacks is demonstrated through several case studies. The simulation results highlight the importance of devising cyber-resilient protection systems for microgrids to maintain their resilience benefits.
