Summary:A methodology for quick seakeeping assessment of warships for helicopter operations at sea in rough weather was proposed by the authors during 17 th IBCAST. This paper presents application of the approach by assessing suitability of helicopter operations onboard four theoretical warships. Motion RAOs database has been developed for the four warships using a commercial seakeeping software. A VBA based code has been developed for MS Excel, which reads RAOs database, calculates motion RAOs for the actual loading condition, estimates motion statistics using response spectral moments for a combination of characteristic wave periods unit significant heights. Polar plots representing operability envelops are produced by the software duly considering the motion limitations imposed on helicopter operation by Bureau Veritas naval ship rules. Wave scatter data for North Atlantic, as per lACS recommendation no. 34, has been used to predict operability windows of the warships for helicopter operations on a worldwide-basis as a test case.
