Summary:The article deals with the control of the cable lines insulation. The main problems which inevitably arise during cable lines monitoring with diagnostic equipment designed to work with disconnected lines are indicated. The disadvantages of the currently used devices for cable lines insulation monitoring which react to the zero sequence currents due to possible uncertainty in determining the cause of these currents relating to the weakening of insulation or to asymmetric consumers are presented. It is shown that placing two measuring units of the insulation monitoring system at the beginning and the end of the cable lines provides more reliable and reasonable results for finding the cause of the occurrence of the zero-sequence currents. In addition, the authors consider the use of negative sequence currents to identify the insulation weakening between the phases of the cable lines, as the phase-to-phase damages are comparable in frequency to the appearance of single-phase ones.
