Summary: | Rotary dryers have been used in many industrial sectors, including the cement, fertilizer, and minerals industries, because of their high processing capacity and their greater flexibility in handling a wide variety of materials than other types of dryers. There are two main types of configurations of a rotary drum: with flights and without flights. For both configurations, the fluid dynamics aspects strongly influence the drying performance. This chapter presents some important analysis about the fluid dynamics behavior in rotary drums with and without flights. The prediction of the particle motion inside a rotary drum, including the effect of the granular material properties, is of fundamental importance. Particle segregation is shown to negatively affect the process performance in rotary drums, where minor differences in physical properties can segregate particles when rotary drums are in movement, yielding poor mixing zones. |
