Sewage sludge treatment with biomass ash for its agricultural use

We determined the adequate dose of biomass ash (BA) (30, 50, 100 and 150 % (w/w, on dry weight basis)) for the treatment of a sewage sludge (SS) and the effect of BA treated SS on soil properties and survival of radish seedlings compared to SS treated with hydrated lime (SS-Lime). The results obtain...

Summary:We determined the adequate dose of biomass ash (BA) (30, 50, 100 and 150 % (w/w, on dry weight basis)) for the treatment of a sewage sludge (SS) and the effect of BA treated SS on soil properties and survival of radish seedlings compared to SS treated with hydrated lime (SS-Lime). The results obtained showed that the use of BA for SS conditioning was more effective for SS dewatering and sanitising than SS-Lime. In addition, the high K content of the BA increased the fertilising value of the SS-BA mixtures and none of these mixtures had a heavy metal content above the maximum levels allowed. Furthermore, the most suitable dose of ash for the agricultural use of the SS-BA mixture was 30%, since with this treatment the highest survival of radish seedlings and the notable increase in the available K and P contents of the soil were achieved.
