Abstract In this paper, an optimal lighting control strategy is designed for the lighting system with multiple lighting sources, to cut down the electric energy consumption. In the proposed control strategy, a novel multivariable fractional-order extremum seeking control (FO ESC) strategy is implemented into minimizing the light-energy consumption through separately regulating the brightness of multi-lighting sources, while a PID method is applied to guarantee the desired lighting level. Experimental results show that the light-energy consumption under the proposed strategy can approach more quickly to a smaller neighborhood of the minimum lighting-energy point.
