Summary:This paper proposes a simple dead-time effect compensation method based on U CE -measurement for direct converters controlled by a 2/4-step commutation approach. Since the U CE -measurement is utilized for the current sign determination, the compensation is still working at current zero crossings. Employed on a V-connection AC chopper as instance of direct converters, the current quality is improved significantly in contrast to the one-step commutation. This is proven experimentally and the results are compared to the recent proposed one-step commutation scheme using only U CE -measurement. For demonstrating the advantages of the compensation method, results of the 2/4-step commutation without the dead-time compensation are shown as well.
