Summary:This case study details electrical safety items and power quality assessment in conjunction with an IR survey of 285 panels and 85 transformers that was conducted in December 2004 and January 2005. The assessments were extremely useful in avoiding potential incidents and costly equipment shutdowns. This survey highlighted some of critical NEC deficiencies which were corrected immediately. Approximately 85 % of these panels and transformers displayed minor to major NEC deficiencies, and 12 % of these panels and transformers showed unusual temperature abnormalities. At present, we are using our maintenance resources to rectify the remaining deficiencies. Initially, we employed a licensed electrical inspector who conducted a series of site inspections and classroom training. The training included a basic overview of new NEC codes changes, and how to enhance skill sets of our technicians that were assigned to rectify the deficiencies. We were concerned regarding the overall conditions and safety of our 33 year old 480-277/208-120V power, lighting, receptacle panels, and distributions transformers. In 1999-2000, our preliminary survey found that - 480/277V -208/120V power, lighting and receptacle panels and distributions transformers needed thorough inspection and meticulous clean-up. We investigated upcoming IR technology and found out that the infrared camera could be a very useful tool in diagnosing any temperature abnormalities as result of loose terminations, overloading or questionable design and /or installation of any electrical apparatus.
