Summary:This paper presents a semidefinite optimization technique for finding optimal size and operating strategy of distributed generation (DG) units in both transmission system and radial distribution system. The optimal sizing and location problem is formulated with the multi-objective performance indices which include the size of DGs, loss reduction subject to the load flow and restrictions of voltage magnitude for each bus. The method has been tested in the 33-bus and 69-bus radial distribution system and 30-bus transmission system considering single and multiple DG units and optimal power factors of DG units.
