Summary:This paper reviews and evaluates three traditional impedance-based algorithms used for estimating the location of a fault on ac transmission lines. All of them use phasor measurement units from one terminal data as input. The sensitivity of the algorithms to fault characteristics and to inaccuracy of transmission line impedance is compared. The evaluation was carried out using the Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS®), in which those algorithms were implemented and several fault scenarios were automatically simulated on a modeled transmission line.
