Summary:The scope of this paper is to present the fundamental concepts and methodologies of fault detection, fault tolerant control and monitoring in an simplified manner, affordable to undergraduate electrical engineering students. The most common faults that may occur during the induction motor operation are depicted, since the induction machine is still the workforce of the industry. The throughout presentation is supported by various experimental and simulation results. Finite element analysis of a faulty induction motor is also presented in order to highlight the application of the method for modeling faulty conditions and the importance that it holds on the better understanding of the fault and the effects it has on the machine performance and electromagnetic field, as they can't be observed directly.
