Summary:On December 1, 1992, a new company, NTT Power and Building Facilities Inc., was established. This started a new era in Japan's telecommunications energy systems' operations. Engineering and management activities for telecommunications energy systems and buildings that Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) had previously conducted within its organization were transferred to the new company in the form of a specialized business. This new company is the first instance in which NTT has organized its existing activities as a full-scale business, and the move is significant from the standpoint of managerial promotion in the NTT group. Here we discuss the circumstances that led up to this commercialization and the fundamental purpose reflected by its goals and status.< >
