Summary:This paper presents a system controller for hybrid electric vehicles using hybrid dynamical system theory. The hierarchical control structure of parallel hybrid electric vehicle systems is first introduced and the drive control problem of the vehicle is formulated using the hybrid dynamical system theory. The controller design problem and the optimal control of the vehicle system is investigated and an optimal coordination strategy is developed based on the minimization of the system cost subject to system constraints, where the optimal solution is obtained by solving a sequential quadratic programming problem. The simulation is conducted with a comparison study between the optimal control strategy and a rule-based control strategy.
