Summary:The need for a low cost, Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) monitoring system in transformer neutrals is identified. Analysis of existing measurement systems considered three alternatives. Based on requirements for utility planning and operations, evaluation of the cost, availability and reliability identified the proposed system, which supports remote data monitoring. Electric power system utilities and operators can implement the proposed remote GIC monitoring systems with minimum investment.
