Summary:Sulfur is the fourteenth most plentiful element in the earth's crust. Ninetyfive percent of this element is contained in the lithospheric component (Lens et al., 2000). Hydrosphere, the second component, contains approximately 5% of the total sulfur (S) in the sea water. Sulfate is the second plentiful anion in the sea water. Sulfide ores like pyrite (FeS2), covellite (CuS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), galena (PbS) and sphalerite (ZnS) constitute the other sources of sulfur.
