Summary: | Strategies based on the use of protection groups have a signicant role in the synthesis of organic
compounds, especially when it involves selective modication of one group in the presence of several other reactive functional groups. Despite the versatility of protection groups, their utilization
in chitosan chemistry has not been extensive and is limited almost exclusively to phthaloyl, trityl,
and silyl ether protection groups. Efcient protecting group strategy can have a dual role in chitosan
chemistry, that is, to protect a functional group for chemoselective or regioselective modication
and to improve the solubility of the polymer in organic solvents, thereby promoting efcient modi-cations under homogeneous conditions. |
