An EPR study of Cr3+ centres having monoclinic symmetry in TlZnF3 single crystals

Summary:EPR measurements have been made on as-grown single crystals of TlZnF3 doped with chromium. From Cr-only-doped crystals, two types of Cr3+ spectra with monoclinic symmetry were observed together with three kinds of Cr3+ spectra with trigonal symmetry which has been reported in our previous work (Ebisu et al 2005 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 17 4653-63). The obtained fine structure parameters for the monoclinic spectra are analysed using the spin-Hamiltonian separation method. Each monoclinic spectrum is ascribed to a Cr3+ ion, respectively, at a Zn2+ ion site in a ZnF6 unit or a Zn2F9 unit with a Tl+ vacancy. Distortions of the ligand octahedra are discussed using the separated axial parameters.
