Summary: | The World Drug Report suggests that the number of people reporting recent use of illicit drugs has remained stable over the last decade; however, there has been a surge in the cultivation, trafficking and supply of drugs (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime 2008). In particular opium cultivation, which eventually finds its way on to the streets of the UK as heroin, has risen by 17 per cent since 2006 to 235,700 hectares of land under cultivation. Similar increases in coca production (16 per cent) in South America have also been observed. |
