Summary:In Japan, it is inevitable that many people live in flood-prone areas due to the limited amount of habitable land even though flood risk is increasing. There is a pressing need for residents to accurately recognize the risk in order to avoid misfortune. The purpose of the proposed study is to examine the effects on risk perception, relief, anxiety, intention to purchase a house, and intention to purchase insurance when participants with the intention to purchase a house are presented with four patterns of flood-risk information based on a combination of flooding depth and probability of flood occurrence. We expect that there will be main effects of flooding depth and probability of occurrence. In particular, we will explore the interaction between flooding depth and probability as there are, to the authors' knowledge, no previous findings regarding their effects. Theoretical and practical implication will be discussed.
