Summary:Animation is an important aspect of most Virtual Reality (VR) applications including industrial applications such as VR training or product demonstration. Animations can be used to present the behavior or intended use of a component or product and can also be used as a visual cue or guide during VR training. Studies have shown that creating animations while immersed in the virtual space has several benefits including increasing the creativity and productivity of artists. Previous work on animation authoring in VR, however, has mostly been targeted towards animation artists, attempting to recreate traditional animation tools in VR, which are known for their complexity and steep learning curve. During this industrial PhD project I aim to investigate and create immersive animation authoring tools for industrial use cases targeted towards subject matter experts from the manufacturing industry. In this paper, I present the motivations and background for this project as well as the current status and planned future work.
