Summary:This paper proposes efficient use of solar energy for automatic street lighting system using microcontroller. The main objective is to make street lighting system free from manual operation so that there would not be any unnecessary usage of light. This system consists of microcontroller, three different sensors for sensing light, human and vehicle and array of LEDs. We will be using solar panel and batteries to store and then convert solar energy to electrical which is to be used for street lighting system. During daytime, solar energy is stored and then depending upon natural light illumination in surrounding the array of LEDs glow using same convert solar energy. The on/off movement of LEDs depends upon input/output of sensors. The system is controlled by microcontroller used so there is accuracy in switching actions and there would not be over usage of light when not required. Around, 65%-70% reduction in power consumption is achieved with this proposed system.
