Summary:In addition to rated operations, there is a recognized need for the high overload capacity of electric motors, particularly in scenarios of electric ship/aircraft propulsion, heavy mining vehicles, robotics, and machining tools. Through existing studies and practices, motor designers and engineers commonly acknowledge that the overload capacity of motors for extended periods of time not only benefits drive systems from reduced volume and low cost, but also challenges the reliability and safety threshold. To develop high overload motors is a timely topic but related overviews to discuss technical routes are hardly found. This review article observes three routes to high overload motors, i.e., electrical, magnetic, and thermal, while summarizes emerging technologies to achieve the routes. The observations of this review will promote the efficient and reliable operation of heavy machinery in a wider range of industries
