Summary:This paper shares the experience of incorporating career development learning through real world assessments in mechanical engineering course. Traditionally exams and tests have been preferred methods of assessments to assess the knowledge and understanding of students. While research shows benefits of using authentic assessments, but this method of assessment has not yet found strong uptake from the mechanical engineering academic practitioners. Through examples, this paper shows the benefits of using authentic assessments over the traditional exam or test type of assessments. The paper also shares the experience of how to empower students to become self-learners and discourage plagiarism.
