Summary:Hearing loss is a common affliction, caused by genetic factors, infection, noise exposure, and most commonly, by age-related sensorineural degradation. Sensorineural hearing loss stems from damage to the hair cells of the cochlea - a snail-shaped organ inside the inner ear which transforms fluid vibrations into electrical signals transmitted to the auditory nerve. Damage and age-related wear to cochlear hair cells induces frequency dependent hearing loss.
