Summary:Realization of fractional order capacitor or inductor (fractance) is possible using fractional order differentiator (FOD) and fractional order integrator (FOI) respectively. The property of fractional order impedance is capitalized to realize the fractance devices. In this paper, rational approximation of the fractional order operators (FOO) are done using a nature inspired meta-heuristic approach known as chaotic crow search algorithm (CCSA). This method provides a very good accuracy in terms of the magnitude as well as phase response characteristics of the approximate transfer function derived from the corresponding FOO. Oustaloup's approximation is also utilized to get the rational transfer function and a comparative analysis is done using MATLAB to find the efficacy of the proposed method. As a next step toward the realization of the fractance device, TINA software is utilized, and the efficacy of the proposed method is established through the application of a developed fractional order capacitor in integrator circuit realization.
