Summary: | Case-based learning (CBL) is an active teaching method that helps enhance students' critical thinking abilities as well as improving learning outcomes in various health disciplines. This study used CBL to promote pharmacy students' understanding of cardiovascular pharmacology. Students were assigned case scenarios and were asked to review pathophysiology of selected cardiovascular diseases and apply their analytical thinking ability in association with mechanisms of actions of cardiovascular drugs. Students were also assigned to study patients' information and make reasonable drug choices according to principles of rational drug use. After CBL sessions, the average test score of the students was 80.88%, with 87.88% of the students achieving over 70% of the test scores. Using a self-assessment questionnaire, 77% of the students reported that they had received the knowledge that was expected in accordance with class objectives. In addition, the students had the highest satisfaction with the CBL teaching and learning management in two aspects, which were 1) knowledge gained from this learning format and 2) opportunity to discuss and share opinions. |
