Summary:With noncoherent reception, channel state information is not required. Therefore, there is no need to transmit pilot symbols, which means that all available resources are used to carry payload information. Coded modulation is used to improve the performance of a digital communication system through the interaction between the code and the modulation scheme. One of its varieties is trellis coded modulation (TCM). In traditional TCM, coherent reception is assumed. In this work, we combine TCM with signal codebooks suitable for noncoherent reception. The signals in one codebook consist of a phase shift keying symbol and a pilot, while in the other codebook they were optimized using a neural network. The results obtained for the proposed noncoherent TCM and the uncoded noncoherent system with similar parameters are compared. It turned out that in the case of a channel with additive white Gaussian noise, a gain of 3.5-4 dB is achieved, and in the Rayleigh fading channel, a diversity effect is demonstrated.
