Summary:Partial Discharge (PD) signal is an important parameter reflecting the insulation condition of High Voltage(HV) cables. Meanwhile, PD detection and monitoring is an effective way to ensure the safe and stable operation of the HV cables. Due to the limited bandwidth and the poor anti-interference ability of the current PD sensors, there are a lot of interference signals in the detected PD signals. To overcome the challenge, a novel built-in metal foil sensor for PD detection of HV cables is presented in the paper. The influencing factors of the PD detecting sensitivity, which are the single electrode and the two electrodes, the size of the electrodes, the shape of the single electrode and the distance between the two electrodes, are evaluated. The experimental data is accumulated to determine the parameters of the metal foil sensor. Experimental results show that the built-in metal foil sensor has excellent efficiency in PD signal reception in both laboratory and experimental base, which is applicable for on-line PD detecting of HV cables.
