Summary:This paper proposes an original method for estimating wind velocity in wind energy conversion systems. This method is based on estimating the mechanical power of the turbine, by proposing a new algorithm that considers the gusts. An observer is used for estimating the mechanical torque and the speed of the turbine. Then the mechanical power of the turbine is computed and the wind speed is estimated by the least square optimization method. Simulations were performed to validate the effectiveness and the robustness of the proposed estimation methods.
