Summary:True bipolar voltage source converter (VSC) based high voltage direct current (HVDC) systems have been extensively developed in recent years. An effective arc model simulation method based on PSCAD/EMTDC platform is the basis and key for studying the fault arc characteristics in true bipolar VSC-HVDC systems. First, the arc model theory is analyzed to provide a theoretical basis for modeling the arc model. Then, the arc model simulation method is proposed, which includes: primary arc resistance module, secondary arc resistance module, secondary arc length control module, secondary arc self-extinction module, and arc resistance output module. Finally, simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC verify the effectiveness of the proposed arc model simulation method.
