Summary:The Impulsive Noise Register in the Mediterranean region (INR-MED) has been developed under the QUIETMED project to support the implementation of the Directive 2008/56/EC -Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).The INR-MED is a common tool to register impulsive noise events to facilitate the assessment of pressure levels for Descriptor 11 (Introduction of energy, including underwater noise, is at levels that do not adversely affect the marine environment) in the process relative to the MSFD or to the Ecosystem Approach led by Barcelona Convention (for EU and non-EU Mediterranean Countries). The joint register is a web GIS tool consistent with the existing common registers and with three main functionalities: data exchange, view on a map and calculation of different indicators associated to Criterion 1 of Descriptor 11 (anthropogenic impulsive sound in water) of the MSFD.This tool has a high potential to facilitate the combined risk and impact analysis, through the establishment of link between the pressure and the associated environmental risk through incorporation of information related to biodiversity (Descriptor 1). This challenge will be addressed under the QUIETMED 2 project.
