Summary:The first semester at the university level is considered as decisive for a student, especially for an engineering student. This certain period concerns building a base for the student, consequences to reach out to their professional life. To help the students to utilize that time properly, we are proposing an alternative way to practice programming in the lab classes. We are introducing a collaborative group learning approach along with monthly programming contests on some specific topics among them and encouraging them to work as a group. In the beginning, freshers may not feel comfortable to work in a group with new faces but as they are also very young, they will take the competition as a challenge and will work together to get a good result. In this way, they will collaborate and share their knowledge with one another which will help the weak students to gain enough knowledge about the topic. Although the technique may fairly help the sparkling students, it will help the average and below-average students a lot.
