Summary:This paper addresses the issue of language endangerment among the languages of the Central Maluku region of eastern Indonesia and discusses aspirations for language renewal or language maintenance among the population of Moluccans which has grown from those who migrated to the Netherlands in the 1950s and 1960s. The linguistic situation in this community is very unusual because of the opportunities it provides to document and support in a migrant setting the retention of a substantial number of languages which are severely endangered in their homeland.
