Summary: | Garden waste produced at households can be treated by home composting, but very little information can be found about this subject. On this study conducted by Lipor a model of a house garden was used to assess the amount of garden waste produced while also measuring a compost bins capacity to treat it. The results can then be used to assess the impact of home composting on the deviation of organic waste from municipal collection systems. The study concluded that a garden can produce from 0.95 kg/m2 to 3.24 kg/m2, while a compost bin can admit an input of 204.68 kg of garden waste per year.
In order to collect information that mirrored the household reality and clearly assess the amount of waste produced by a garden Lipor conducted a study in it's waste management facility, particullary at Lipor school for household composting-the Horta da Formiga. The aim of this study was to quantify the production of garden waste from a model household garden as well as to acess the capacity of a commercial 300 L compost bin to manage the garden waste. To quantify the waste production on house gardens we needed to model the same system used at citizen's houses and apply the same technics used by them. This study allowed to assess a value for garden waste production for a model house garden and the capacity of a compost bin to treat and manage the garden waste produced. |
