Summary:The new paradigm of harvest management calls for an assessment of the hunters and anglers who invest in the conservation of the game animals. Hunter and angler behavior and the associated feedbacks have the potential to confound predicted effects of regulations on harvested populations necessitating an even greater understanding of the role of human behavior on harvest management. This chapter includes descriptions of methodology for assessing hunter and angler behavior with examples of information to be gleaned from such assessments. Individuals vary with regard to attitudes, preferences, motivations, and constraints to participation in wildlife-based recreation, which ultimately drives what, where, and how much game is harvested. The authors describe how agencies can use information about hunters and anglers to predict and influence future participation, and they explore the connections between wildlife-based recreation and customer satisfaction. The future of harvest management should include a reshaping of how we view the social components of hunting and fishing. The authors suggest that to refine harvest management, agencies should plan to manage hunters and anglers as well as game populations.
